Validation of Cervical Spine Segment Models in Flexion and Extension at Crash Scenario Strain Rates

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Finite element models of cervical spines are used to simulate loading response and predict injury in car crash scenarios. A computational model of the cervical spine has been developed using new ligament material data including strain rate effects. Model validation is an important requirement and must be conducted at appropriate strain rates for accurate prediction of kinetic and kinematic response. The purpose of this study was to perform high strain rate segment level loading on cervical spine segments and use the results to validate a detailed, finite element model.

High Rate Behaviour of the Cervical Spine Segments
Understanding the response of the cervical spine segments to high rate loading can help in predicting and preventing injuries in car crash scenarios. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the cervical spine demonstrates increased stiffness in flexion and extension at higher rates of rotation. Recent ligament studies have demonstrated increased cervical spine ligament stiff...
متن کاملPredicting the Risk of Hearing Impairment Following the Cervical Spine Diseases by Measuring the Cervical Range of Movements: A Pilot Study
Introduction: Cervical spine abnormalities can affect the ear vessels and or nerves with different mechanisms. Ear dysfunctions following cervical spine injuries can be manifested as hearing loss, vertigo, or tinnitus. Usually, cervical spine injuries can cause pain and Range of Motion (ROM) limitation. The major objective of this study was to determine which cervical ROM limitation was accompa...
متن کاملSpinal cord mechanics during flexion and extension of the cervical spine: a finite element study.
The cervical spinal cord is at a great risk for injury during traumatic accidents occurring within people of relatively young age. Spinal cord injury can not be easily characterized clinically nor through in vitro testing. An understanding of cervical spinal cord deformation is important for defining an injury threshold of the spinal cord. Therefore, an analytical method may be beneficial for d...
متن کاملCervical spine intervertebral kinematics with respect to the head are different during flexion and extension motions.
Previous dynamic imaging studies of the cervical spine have focused entirely on intervertebral kinematics while neglecting to investigate the relationship between head motion and intervertebral motion. Specifically, it is unknown if the relationship between head and intervertebral kinematics is affected by movement direction. We tested the hypothesis that there would be no difference in sagitta...
